Word has been received of the death of Donald C. Smith, 61, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Antrim, who died Saturday (April 7, 2001).

He was born Sept. 3, 1949, in Summerfield, son of the late Harley and Lillian Smith.

Mr. Smith had worked at Salt Fork State Park, Cambridge, as a maintenance worker.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Sue.

He leaves his wife, Wanda (Pully) Smith, whom he married June 4, 1965; three children, Jeff of Florida, Donnie of Middlebourne, and Donna of Florida; two brothers, Warren (Betty) Smith of Old Washington, and Harry (Joyce) Smith of Marietta; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Bernadine E. “Gert” Lackey, 75, of Cambridge, died Monday (April 9, 2001).

She was born May 17, 1925, in Cambridge, daughter of the late Alfred and Edna (Hare) Berg.

Mrs. Lackey retired from NCR, after more than 20 years of service. She also worked at RCA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Lackey, on Jan. 19, 1979.

She leaves three daughters, Mrs. William (Debra) Tilton of Cambridge, Mrs. Frances (Sandra) DeWees of Zanesville, and Mrs. David (Betty Jo) Dobson of Columbus; a son, James Lackey of Cambridge; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

No calling hours will be observed.

Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge, with the Rev. Michael Seely officiating.

Charles W. Stevens, 81, of Cambridge, died Tuesday (April 10, 2001) at his home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1920, in Lore City, son of the late William and Pansy (Corwin) Stevens.

Mr. Stevens was a 29-year employee of the former Cambridge State Hospital, having worked in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1974.

He also worked at Hizek Glass Co. of Newark.

He attended the Abundant Life Pentecostal Church, and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Lee Stevens; three brothers, Earl Stevens, George Stevens and Howard Stevens; a sister, Wilma McConkey; a step-sister, Minnie Stevens; a step-brother, Clarence Harper; and a half-brother, Leonard Corwin.

He leaves his wife, Helen M. (Wolf) Stevens of the home, whom he married Nov. 16, 1945; a daughter, Mrs. Jimmie (Rebecca A.) Nealey of Cambridge; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge, where services will be 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor Jerry Blankenship officiating.

Burial will be in Guernsey Memory Gardens. Military graveside services will be conducted by Guernsey County Veterans Council.

BYESVILLE — David McElroy, 50, of Lorain, died unexpectedly while at work Monday (April 9, 2001).

He was born Jan. 15, 1951, in Cambridge, son of the late Richard McElroy and Josephine (Erbes) Wheeler.

Mr. McElroy attended Meadowbrook and Cambridge high schools, and Mahoning Valley Industrial Training School. He was employed at R.T.I. Steel Co., where he served as an operator-mechanic.

He was a member of Eagles 386, Moose Lodge 620 and H.O.G. Elyria Chapter.

He loved Harleys, motorcycle riding and camping.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip Wheeler.

He leaves his mother, Josephine Wheeler and step-father, Mel Wheeler; his wife, Linda (Shepard) McElroy of Lorain, whom he married Jan. 31, 1977; two sons, David (Sarah) McElroy of Vermillion, and Dean Wilson of Elyria; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Melissa) Kozach of Lorain, and Mrs. James (Donna) Meyers of Austin, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Joan (Joe) Lucas of Byesville; 11 grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Black Family Funeral Service, Byesville. Moose Lodge will have services 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Revs. Sturman Moore and Gary Moore officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Byesville.

WOODSFIELD — Thelma L. Hercher, 76, of Sycamore Valley, died Tuesday (April 10, 2001) at her home.

She was born Jan. 3, 1925, near Sycamore Valley, daughter of the late Ode and Nora (Marshall) Lindamood.

Mrs. Hercher was a retired homemaker and dairy farmer. She was a member of Creighton Ridge Church of Christ near Sycamore Valley.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Hercher Sr., on Feb. 11, 1998; a sister, Edna Linda; two brothers, Forrest Lindamood and Gerald Lindamood.

She leaves a son, Ralph H. Hercher Jr. of Sycamore Valley; a daughter, Mrs. Dean (Dr. Rhonda Hercher) Schweitzer of Toledo; a brother, Ralph Lindamood of Massillon; two grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Watters Funeral Home Woodsfield, and from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Creighton Ridge Church of Christ near Sycamore Valley, with services to follow at 1 p.m. with Dana Morrison and Vernon Crum officiating.

CALDWELL — Grace Beatrice Sanford, 97, of Caldwell, died Tuesday (April 10, 2001) at Summit Acres Nursing Home, Caldwell.

CALDWELL — M. Emalene Scheich, 60, of Caldwell, died Tuesday (April 10, 2001) at her home, following an apparent heart attack.

She was born March 30, 1941, in Noble County, daughter of Cleo M. Thompson Feldner of Caldwell, and the late Chester Leland “Boob” Feldner.

Mrs. Scheich attended Middleburg School and was a graduate of Dexter City High School.

She was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church in Caldwell, where she was also belonged to the Catholic Women’s Club and a Bible Share group.

She leaves her husband, Kenneth K. Scheich, whom she married July 30, 1966; a son, Karl (Colleen) Scheich of Caldwell; a daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Cleo) Stanberry of Cambridge; five brothers, Gail (Donna) Feldner, Norman (Jackie) Feldner, Jeff Feldner and La Verne (Belinda) Feldner, all of Caldwell, and Lloyd (Sheila) Feldner of Hiramsburg; a granddaughter, Molly Elizabeth Scheich of Caldwell; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
